It’s been a long time coming but it appears that in an exciting broadcast made by TradeDoubler last Thursday they may just be ready to roll out their latest offering – Contextual Ad Serving. It hasn’t really been picked up by many affiliate bloggers I thought I’d put it out there and help spread the word. It may be that this broadcast was only sent to affiliate managers so in which case it would be good to hear the opinions of the affiliates who will actually get to use this technology.
Way back in March 2006 TraderDoubler bought out Advertigo for a handsome sum of 10 Million SEK (approx £769k). Interestingly Advertigo had not started trading but were snapped up by TradeDoubler with a view to incorporating their two main products into TradeDoublers long term strategy. What were these products? Pay Per Call and Contextual Ad Serving.
Whilst contextual ad serving certainly isn’t anything new (how many years has AdSense been around now?) it’s certainly the first time I’ve seen any major affiliate network take up the challenge of dynamically serving links relative to the publishers content. As with all contextual ad serving technology the core strength lies within the algorithm and formulas used to serve ads. We’ve probably all seen crazy examples of AdSense where the topic has absolutely nothing to do with the website copy so if the algo’ team at Google can’t get that right what chance will TradeDoubler?
As it’s only going to be a Beta launch with select publishers there’s no doubt a lot of fine tuning to go through but it’ll be great to see the end results and performance.
So what are your thoughts? Here’s the announcement in full.

Contextual Advertising Solution will launch in Beta with selected publishers in December, and a full roll-out to all customers will follow early next year. Interesting news. affilinet (Germany) have been offering two contextual products similar to ad sense for sometime now. One developed with eBay DE and another product called affilimatch. Both have been very successful.
We are looking at rolling this out across the UK / France shortly.
I will forgive the faux pas :-p
webgains has had automatic product contextual advertising based on iSense technology officially since August, matching the content of the affiliate page with products from our feeds.
cheers
Anybody got any humble pie?
Joking aside and thanks for chipping in guys. I wasn’t aware of either of your contextual offerings but will certainly check them out.
I’ve been speaking to TradeDoubler about the launch and will have several merchants taking part in their beta launch. I’m sure I’ll post up some initial thoughts and findings when they go live.
Cheers
Paul
Did they ever go live?
