Hot off the Google press machine is a new feature Called “ad placements” which in a nutshell allows Adsense publishers to define groups of ads and highlight them to Google Adwords users as premium positions.
The new Adsense service acts and operates very similar to the current way in which Adsense users can define new channels and monitor performance. This time however, when you create your channel you are faced with an extra option – “Targeting: Show this channel to advertisers as an ad placement”. Advertisers then have the ability to target your channels and search your description rather than have to go through the process of manually hunting for websites and then specifying which page to target. This service should prove popular for Adwords users who have thus far shied away from placing their ads in the content network in addition to the standard search network. For publishers it should also mean better rates as advertisers battle it out for premium spots.
Currently the service is only available for those select few Adsense publishers luckily enough to have been approached by Google but for those who missed the cut take a stroll over to John Chow’s blog who has also kindly put up a snap shot of the new interface.
Here’s the original Google email (private link removed for obvious reasons)
“Hello,
We’re excited to let you know that your account is one of a select few for which we’ve enabled a new feature called ad placements. Ad placements are groups of ad units that you can define and highlight to advertisers. Creating an ad placement is as easy as creating a custom channel, and ad placements will help you generate more revenue by increasing the visibility of your ad spaces to advertisers. To help you learn more and take advantage of this new feature, we’d like to invite you to an AdSense webinar where members of the AdSense and AdWords Product Management Team will walk you through ad placements as well as provide you with valuable insight into what advertisers want to see from publishers. We’ll also leave time for the team to answer any questions you may have on these topics.

Still reading? Well you might like to remind yourself of the following image released by Google a year or two back but still very much relevant today. It outlines the results and data gathered from thousands of publishers and indicates exactly which ad positions are best for Adsense – you might want to think about tagging these as “premium” if you haven’t already. :)
