Nigeria number one for Affiliate Marketing

Nigeria number one for Affiliate Marketing

March 22, 2009  |  Affiliate Marketing

If I told you that the popularity of affiliate marketing online is largely driven by people in the US, followed by the UK and then on to other European countries I don’t think anybody would batter an eyelid. But what if I said that there’s another country where affiliate marketing is more that 4 times as popular than it is in the states?

This afternoon I was simply carrying out a simple bit of research into the growth of affiliate marketing over the years and was studying the information within Google Insights for Search.

As you’d expect things are on the up year on year as the affiliate industry continues to mature and establish itself as a major route to market.

There’s also a lot of talk at the moment of traditional content websites who have previously carried CPM only inventory switching towards a CPA model. A similar search on display marketing shows search interest around this channel declining.

What I wasn’t expecting though was the following table which puts Nigeria on top of all countries interested in affiliate marketing.

Sure, we’re all familiar with Nigeria and rather sadly their reputation with fraud online but top of the table? I mean, in a country where broadband penetration is low and computers and internet on the whole aren’t readily accessible to the majority it’s quite surprising that the figures are skewed so much.

One answer might be that it’s the volume vs. interest percentages that are swaying the figures here? I can imagine this would make more sense as the amount of people interested in affiliate marketing within the UK as a percentage of total searches would be tiny. I’m still not convinced though, something not quite right here.

  5. Hey refreshing info there.

I always say it. Nigeria is the place where it is happening. We have got the numbers.

We have got the people who are hungry for knowledge. We have got people willing to learn.

Soon when they begin to unleash what they have learnt, i.e take ACTION, the world will stand
up and recognize NIGERIA as the greatest country on earth. The people are marvelous. Forget the few who miss it.

  6. I’m surprised but not surprised. Nigerians are a very very smart people. When it comes to making money they are I think very savvy. Unfortunately some have used their smarts to dupe people out of their money which is completely wrong. Maybe they can channel some of that intellect into making money the right way and free themselves from some of the financial choke hold they are experiencing. I know the government doesn’t do much for the people so others have to resort to unethical behavior. Doesn’t justify it but I guess it is what it comes down to if you have to eat and survive.

  7. well, i feel at home with intelligent talk. my research on the topic brought me here n i wud love to be a part of this thing u guys re cahing in on. Paul…

  8. A nigerian online bookstore I think will compete with amazon is walahi.com; Thier books are cheaper. They should develop an affiliate marketing program and also acquire more books. Am a Ghananian, but am impress by nigeria’s walahi.com’s vision.

  9. The internet is a good leverage for becoming self-employed. How? Know people’s problems and find solutions to it. That is it! Thanks to Google
