Backlinks from the mighty .gov domain.

November 13, 2006  |  Affiliate Marketing, Search Engines

I stumbled upon this on eBay a couple of days ago and couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. For a whopping £5,200 you could buy the opportunity to host your site in a subfolder of an existing .gov site with 3 million inbound links. The SEO experts amongst you will know the ranking power and “trust” gained from a link on an establish .gov domain such as this. However we’re talking about full on hosting here which has to be the Holy Grail!

I say “could have the opportunity” because the mystery seller offers no guarantees as to the longevity of the hosting contract nor any guarantees as to the effectiveness on your seo. Furthermore the seller was not willing to reveal the URL until the auction is over and will not be offering FTP access (you’ll need to send your files to them to upload). The sceptical amongst us are already suggesting that it all sounds fishier than the name of this affiliate marketing blog but that certainly didn’t stop people bidding.

  1. Wow that’s crazy. I agree with you, it looks very dodgy. What on earth are those people thinking of.

  2. I’ve been searching around the web to see if i could find any more people chatting about this and came across >this article on threadwatch< that suggests that this could infact be a hacker posing as the owner/webmaster of the domain. Would certainly explain a few things!
